holly jolly christmas: winners & recap

The thing about big events and holidays and celebrations and pretty much anything you spend a lot of time planning and anticipating is the weird feelings you have when it’s all over. It seems to go by so quickly and it’s a little sad when it comes to an end, but if it all went according to plan there’s also a feeling of “I can’t wait to do that again!” Without a doubt, I have those feelings today. Who knows, maybe we can do something fun again this spring?!

This giveaway event over the past week was no small project, and it was the first giveaway I’ve ever hosted. I’m absolutely thrilled with how well it went, and I hope you guys enjoyed it too. And special thank you to my friends at HUSQVARNA VIKING® for being so wonderful and helpful and accommodating. We got so many fantastic brands to join us too, and I want to thank them as well. Beyond grateful for your generosity!

Loving all these Christmas colors! Now, can someone invite me somewhere fancy so I wear some of it?!

Congratulations to our winners! You guys are getting some ridiculously great stuff!

Day 1: Katalin H., Washington

Day 2: Stephanie N., New Hampshire

Day 3: Cate R., Pennsylvania

Day 4: Julie W., West Virginia

Day 5: Iris S., Arizona

Day 6: Christina W., Utah

Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who entered. We received thousands of entries! I mean, I know we all love freebies, but it really meant a great deal to me that you all kept coming back to read the posts and enter each day. I got so many kind comments and thoughtful questions over the last week, and I was so happy to hear from so many of you.

I’ll be back on Tuesday with four days of blog posts. There’s lots to go over before we ring in a new year! On Tuesday, I’m going to review all my “misses” of 2017. I think it’s just as important to review all the things that didn’t work in addition to the things that did, and I like to get the flubs out of the way first thing. Wednesday, we’ll be talking about the embroidered jacket in Wednesday’s post. I made it with the DESIGNER EPIC™ sewing and embroidery machine, so there’s tons to tell you about how I did it.

On Thursday, I’m going to highlight the hits of 2017, all my favorite projects and best content. On Friday, a general overview of the DESIGNER EPIC™ will wrap up 2017. Then, we can enjoy some bubbly over a long weekend and celebrate a fresh start and new year of opportunity. I cannot wait for 2018!

Thank you all again, so very much. Merry Christmas!

-Emily

P.S. Today you can find me on the fabric.com blog talking about one of my favorite things on earth, sequin fabric. More on sequins in 2018. 🙂

holly jolly christmas: day 5

Congratulations to our day 4 winner, Julie!

As a brand ambassador for HUSQVARNA VIKING® this year, I’ve had the opportunity to dip my toes in machine embroidery, which is something I’ve always been curious about and wanted to learn how to do. Those of you who have watched the process unfold know that I started out slowly, just learning the basics and experimenting with fabric and stabilizer combinations. Then, for a project in July I became more familiar with the software I have, PREMIER+ 2 EXTRA Embroidery Software, and made a fun, 4th of July inspired apron. With that software, I was able to select the design I wanted, resize it, duplicate it, and create exactly what I wanted. Then, it was as easy as exporting the file onto a USB and uploading it to my machine and letting the machine do the rest.

Having the right tools and equipment for the job makes such a difference, and software is part of that. So the first item in today’s giveaway is the PREMIER+™ EXTRA Embroidery Software, the very software I have and love. And you will too! In addition to the software, today’s winner will also be getting an assortment of thread, stabilizer, and hoops from HUSQVARNA VIKING®– so you’ll be more than ready to hit the ground running on your embroidery projects.

July’s project:

Now that I’m a little more familiar with the software and more comfortable with embroidery in general, it’s time to bring some of my ideas to life. I’ve known since the day I made the dress in this fabric that I wanted a matching jacket to go with it – and now I have it. I will dedicate a post to this jacket next week to really get into the nitty gritty of how I did this, but what I’ll say for now is that it couldn’t have been done without the software. I had more fun with this project than I could possibly explain. This was the best, most challenging, inspiring thing I’ve made all year.

With a big embroidery project finally under my belt, I’m ready to have another crack at it. Bring on all the embroidery!

I used McCall’s 7549 to make this jacket, and just like all the other McCall Pattern Company Patterns I use, I love it. All but one of the garments I made for this giveaway event were made with McCall’s patterns, because they’re the best out there. I’ve been a fan of McCall’s Patterns for as long as I’ve been sewing, and I’m absolutely delighted that they’ve joined us for today’s giveaway with five patterns of the winner’s choice and a year’s subscription to Vogue Patterns Magazine. Vogue Patterns is one of those magazines you never throw away – there’s too much valuable information in each issue. Mine are carefully cataloged and stored so I can easily reference things later.

And, if that wasn’t enough, today’s winner will also receive a $50 gift card to JOANN. Pretty much, Day 5 couldn’t get any better in terms of the giveaway – so much great stuff!

The winner of Day 5 will receive:

  • PREMIER+™ EXTRA Embroidery Software,
  • an assortment of hoops, thread, and stabilizer,
  • five patterns of your choice from the McCall Pattern Company,
  • a one-year subscription to Vogue Patterns Magazine,
  • and a $50 gift card to JOANN.

Good luck, and remember to come back tomorrow for our big finale giveaway!

holly jolly christmas: day 3

Congratulations to our Day 2 winner, Stephanie N!

One of my favorite parts about blogging is being in a community of like-minded sewists. It’s so comforting to know that I can say things like “I love fabric” and “I should buy this fabric, right?” and “another floral fabric? here’s my credit card” around you guys, and you just get it. You understand. I can tell you all about the cool fabrics shops I visit and post videos on Instagram Stories of my fabric stash without worrying for one second that you’ll judge me or wonder why it’s so important to me. We’re all friends here.

In a perfect world, I would be able to shop for fabric whenever I want with no concern for money. (I’d wager a guess that most of us feel this way.) Instead, I have to be thoughtful about my purchases. Sometimes I splurge, but most of the time I buy things when I can and when they’re on sale. It’s all about balance. Sometimes I buy things for a specific purpose, but mostly I buy fabric because it’s pretty and inspires me and I have to have it. (Also, my average “buy” amount is 4 yards. I get that question a lot.) When I was in college, I discovered an online store called Fashion Fabrics Club, And I never looked back.

I was the first in my class to find this little gem of a fabric shop, and things quickly got out of hand in the best (and funniest) way. For broke college students in a major that required fabric and supplies purchases, we took whatever help we could get – and FFC has really amazing prices on fabrics. Searching and finding just the right fabric on that site is also like a treasure hunt, so it was even more exciting to find exactly what you were looking for. I’m pretty sure we all showed up to open lab at one time or another with an FFC package that had just been delivered – too excited to open it by ourselves.

Over the years, I have gotten some of the prettiest fabrics from this place, and I knew they would be a perfect fit for this giveaway project. So, the winner of today’s giveaway will be getting $100 gift card to Fashion Fabrics Club – and I’m a tad jealous because that will get you a lot of good stuff. You will have fun spending that, for sure!

Fashion Fabrics Club was also kind enough to provide me with the fabric I used for this project, and it’s one of my favorites of the year. This is a polyester chiffon with tone on tone pearlized daisy sequins. It is absolutely gorgeous.

As with all sequin projects, it’s best to keep it simple. Don’t over complicate it, stick with clean lines and just a few seams. Having already made a sequin dress and skirt this year (both of which were underlined) I kept thinking about doing something a little different. The beauty of this fabric is that it doesn’t scream special occasion so you can get away with it during the day. I used an old, out-of-print unlined jacket pattern, made a couple of adjustments to eliminate some unnecessary seams, and got busy. I love how well this piece came together, and just like the wrap in yesterday’s post, it makes a great gift. (And yes, I know I’m wearing this differently than it’s been designed without the “collar” turned back, but I think it’s a little more modern and fresh this way. Plus, you see less of the wrong side of the fabric.)

I’m a big believer in learning and practicing and always striving to be better, so books and resources are a big part of that. To that end, in today’s giveaway is a copy of Couture Sewing Techniques, which I think is a must have in every seamstress’s library.

Also important? Irons. Irons are super essential. HUSQVARNA VIKING® is providing today’s winner with a SINGER Expert Finish1700 Watt Steam Iron.

The winner of today’s giveaway will receive:

  • A $100 gift card to Fashion Fabrics Club,
  • Couture Sewing Techniques,
  • and the SINGER Expert Finish1700 Watt Steam Iron.

Big, big thanks to Johari at Fashion Fabrics Club for being so awesome and happy to join us for this giveaway project. I am a customer for life, so hurry up and restock the sateen prints for me! 🙂

And, like I’ve been saying for years, HUSQVARNA VIKING® is the best – and we’ve got even more in store for you to win next week. (Big stuff is coming!) Remember, we’re taking the weekend off so we’ll see you at noon on Monday with three more days of giveaways. Thank you for participating, and good luck!
